Sealing cracks in asphalt pavement is a commonly used maintenance procedure
which reduces pavement deterioration by eliminating surface water penetration into
underlying base and sub-base layers. Cracks left untreated will lead to more cracks,
alligator cracking, potholes and sub-base failure. |
Crack sealing is one of the most cost effective pavement preservation tools
available. Potholes and additional cracks will form at 80% of unsealed cracks
versus 1% of sealed cracks. Progressive pavement managers are recognizing
these statistics and the value added to the pavement condition. Crack sealing
is a very important tool for any pavement management program. |

Florida Highway Products has found the AC & Fiber (asphalt cement and
polyester fiber) crack sealing method the most effective. With self-contained
1000 gallon units, the cracks are cleaned with air blasting and the sealant is
extruded by pressure into the crack. The polyester fiber adds strength to the
sealant which in turn increases pavement life. Compared with the smaller equipment
the self-contained 1000 gallon extruders enable unmatched production.
