Open Graded Cold Mix Bituminous Pavement is a mixture of coarse mineral aggregate
mixed at air temperature with a polymer modified asphalt emulsion. This is laid on a
prepared base to the required width and depth.
Aggregate from the stockpile is dumped directly into the front of the
machine. The aggregate is then fed at a controlled rate by a conveyor belt to
a pug mill where it is mixed with the polymer modified asphalt emulsion. The mix
is discharged at the rear of the mixer and spread by augers in front of the
vibratory screed to the desired thickness.
Open Graded Cold Mix Bituminous Pavements are used extensively for treating
unimproved roadways and rehabilitating distressed pavements. Much of the
popularity is due to the several environmental benefits and proven durability.
The safety benefits of an open graded cold mix include a good skid resistance and
a quick draining surface. Even following heavy rains, there is a minimum of standing
water on the pavement surface. Open graded mixes are designed with 15% - 30%
air voids, allowing surface water to enter the pavement and gradually drain through
the structure. This eliminates hydroplaning and gives incredible skid resistance.
In today's environmentally conscious world, efforts to reduce fuel consumption are
applauded. Because open graded cold mix is cold applied and manufactured, our
nation's resources are not wasted on heating. This translates into end cost savings
and a product with a structure coefficient equal to or greater than HMA.
